Michael Fassbender has been confirmed as starring in an upcoming Assassin's Creed film.
No confirmation of who he will be playing yet but I think he seems a good choice for Desmond and/or an ancestor.
So far it seems people are assuming he will play Altair and/or Desmond (it's quite conceivable he could play both) as they've said something along the lines of him playing the lead protagonist/hooded assassin. Of course, they could jump straight to Ezio as he seems to be a more likeable and classic Hollywood character but I hope they start with Altair.
My friend and I were just chatting on facebook about this. She's concerned about a white guy playing Altair. I bet they'll give him an English accent if he DOES play Altair. That seems to be the default voice for difficult-to-do-by-white-dudes-playing-middle-eastern-characters accents (see: "Prince of Persia", "300").

Yeah, that could be a problem but I'm reasonably confident that Fassbender will portray Altair well enough for his accent to be a moot point, although of course it still has an effect on the authenticity of a character and his nationality.
I'm going to approach this film with hope but I'm keeping my expectations quite low so hopefully I can enjoy it however it turns out.
I agree with Double McStab, doing a different time period than the ones treated in the games would be so much better. They should just let Altaïr and Ezio go already. They've both been used in too many games and derived products. Something new would be more appealing.

plus... something new wouldn't leave as much disappointment if it doesn't translate to a movie very well...

I honestly hope this movie isn't an adaptation of AC1/AC2. I hope that it is a new perspective of the Assassin-Templar war; some time period not yet used. My question in this case would be how much do they mix the Animus and Bleeding-Effect in without confusing newcomers to the franchise.
He was the dude in the most recent remake of Jane Eyre, the droid in Prometheus, Magneto in X-Men: First Class, one of the prominent Spartans in 300, someone in Inglorious Basterds, someone in Haywire; he is one of the more popular actors in the past 2-3 years. IMDB
I think they need someone a bit younger looking to play Desmond. He'd be a good Altair though.

I think it should be fine, since he'll be wearing a hood most of the time anyways. It would be hard to tell that he looks different with that much covered.
A film about the AC franchise will be exceedingly difficult to pull of due to the immense subject matter. I'm not sure if it will be able to juggle between the 2 main characters (assuming that an Animus will be in the plot at all) and their character development. I'm sure that they'll be able to squeeze in genetic memories and secret organizations somewhere in there.
Ezio seems to fit the generic Hollywood hero, but Altair is seems more complex and analyzes what he does and why. If any of the games should be adapted for the big screen, then it would have to be ACI. Mainly due to a stronger story and character development. I'm sure that we all know that ACII didn't have much of either to begin with.
I really think ubisoft should use the movie to make another assassin based off the images alone. Cause i wouldn't believe this guy to be a middle eastern assassin during the crusades. Nor an ladies man assassin. Probably Connor though.
This man is Rudy young-blood.
Most commonly known for his role in APOCALYPTO
I personally think he'd be a good Ezio look wise. And a good Connor being Rudy is Native American and has played a Native American before via Apocalypto.
IMO.

Or in nothing at all as the case might be. Before this topic, basically all I knew about Michael Fassbender were George Clooney's comments about his penis.
As my college roommate used to say... It doesn't matter where you get your appetite, as long as you come home for dinner.

... the film ... won’t be tied to any other Assassin’s Creed game project currently in development.
“We are not approaching it as a movie tied into a game,” Cuny said. “It is a time period everybody knows..."
Looks like it won't be tied to any game, good. As I said above, hopefully they take the concept and apply it to completely new characters... and it looks like that's what they are doing.

Hell yeah! I was prepared to be disappointed if it were just AC1.
Video game stories are often hard to adapt into a movie, but the AC universe offers so much freedom, that if you just go do your own thing, it's easy to make a great story through any medium.

EXACTLY! You've created a whole new universe in which to act... go do something else successfully and don't try to live up to something you've already done. Explore and expand the universe further for your fans and I think it will be successful.

I heard so many rumors that he was playing Desmond, but I'm glad they're doing their own story. I was hoping for that deep down.
We also have to keep in mind that more recent information does not equal more accurate information. In this case, I hope it does. I'm hoping they do something completely different from the games. Something that can stand FULLY on its own... maybe have some obscure references to Desmond and the games if you want.
To be honest, they don't even need to mention ancient artifacts and TWCB to have a successful movie. They only have 2 hours to get the plot across, and I hope they "dumb down" some parts of the universe to make it accessible. Maybe simply have a terrorist plot based on something that happened in the past. Find someone whose ancestor was there. Have them go back in time through an animus of sorts and figure out what happened. Then back to present day, use the information to thwart the new plot. End.

Progress has been slow on the Assassin's Creed movie. We now have a tentative release date (December 21, 2016) and a third cast member: Ariane Labed will join fellow French actress Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender.
Also, the Agent 47 movie doesn't look terrible. Thoughts on that?
It LOOKS alright. The visual aspect seems a-okay.
From the reviews I've read though (haven't seen the movie myself), it's not great. People say it works very well as a game, but the movie adaptation fails because the main character is too cold and emotionless.
I really hope the AC movie doesn't fail like so many videogame movies have failed. BTW, someone posted some info on Reddit about one of the sets, which was next to his apartment. There's some pictures in there, check it out if you're interested.

HOLY SH*T F*CKING BALLS! Fassbender is gonna be in it?! He's such an awesome actor! I have no idea who the hell he'd play, but he'd be awesome in it!
For those that don't know, he was in Prometheus and X-Men First Class (as Magneto).

I'd like for the movie to go a completely different way. Away from Desmond. Away from Altair and Ezio.
The whole premise with AC is "we can go anywhere and be anyone." So why limit it. This could be a way into Victorian England, for example.

Definitely positively I could see him as a ladies' man assassin; TBH I wouldn't mind seeing him in anything.
